In support of Free Speech week, on October 23, 2013, the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) presented a panel discussion sponsored by the National Press Club’s Photography Committee on ‘The Right to Photograph & Record in Public.”

Panelists included:

  • Robert Corn-Revere, Partner at Davis Wright Tremaine, LLP, expert in First Amendment law
  • Gwendolyn Crump, Director, Office of Communications, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department
  • J. David Ake, Assistant D.C. Bureau Chief for Photography, Associated Press
  • Timothy D. Mygatt, special counsel at the Justice Department Civil Rights Division
  • Mannie Garcia, award-winning photojournalist
  • Moderator Mickey Osterreicher, General Counsel, National Press Photographers Association

This in-depth discussion by experts in their fields, included topics such as “What are the rights of citizens and the press to photograph and record in public?” and “How can we foster a better understanding of our respective rights and responsibilities in order to have a greater respect for the roles that everyone plays in news gathering and free speech?”  This event was free and open to the public.  Read more about the event on the National Press Club website here.
